What is Captioning?
Captioning
is the process of making the audio portion of a video,
live broadcast, meeting or conference visible in text
form.
Real-time captioning is the ability of a court reporter
to write simultaneously with the audio encoding the
text into shorthand form. Then the shorthand text
is translated by a computer into normal text and sent
to the television or monitor. The text appears, within
seconds of the spoken word, on the screen. Real-time
captioning allows live programs such as, sporting
events, live broadcast, meetings and unscripted portions
of a news broadcast to be captioned as the event takes
place.
