What is Captioning?

Captioning is the process of making the audio portion of a video, live broadcast, meeting or conference visible in text form.

Real-time captioning is the ability of a court reporter to write simultaneously with the audio encoding the text into shorthand form. Then the shorthand text is translated by a computer into normal text and sent to the television or monitor. The text appears, within seconds of the spoken word, on the screen. Real-time captioning allows live programs such as, sporting events, live broadcast, meetings and unscripted portions of a news broadcast to be captioned as the event takes place.

Closed Captioning is the process of encoding the captions so that the captions appear only when decoded by an internal or external decoder.
